One of my mutt / mini rex bunnies kindled 4 (+ 1 foster New Zealand)kits about 3-4 weeks ago. I just noticed that one of the kits is nearly totally bald on the top of his head, and another one is slightly balding. They are the two smallest buns in the nesting box, and the totally bald one is very runty. The bald spots look like normal skin, not red, chapped, or irritated at all. I assume it is just from bullying and over zealous grooming by the other kits, though I have not seen any activity like that. However, I lost several kits this summer (mostly through neglect from their mamas, but one looked like he had seizures with his forelegs thrust forward like a dog play-bowing and his head thrown back looking at the sky). I am concerned that I might be missing a symptom of something serious. None of the previous casualties had any hair loss.
I am reluctant to take his into the local vet, because he is mostly an agricultural vet and though he is helpful when dealing with cats and dogs, he has been pretty cavalier about helping me out solving bunny issues. He told me once, "Hey, a loss rate of 10% would make most experienced livestock raisers pretty happy. Don't sweat the small stuff, and don't waste your money trying to solve all the mysteries. Cull, and focus on the healthy ones." The next closest vet is about 90 miles away, so I'm hoping someone on this forum has a suggestion.
