I have to send 2.. no, 3..... no 4!!! baby shower gifts in the next little while:shock:

What on Earth am I supposed to give to someone that is practical, that no one else will likely get for them?

Moms & anybody who's even looked at a baby, I need your wisdom... what was the gift you wish you had gotten at your shower, or something that came in handy?

I was thinking about making baby first aid kids (which strangely enough reads like bunny first aid kits... simethicone, pedialyte, neosporin... :biggrin2:)

Thoughts??? Something the baby needs? Something the mom needs?

(Shower is on Saturday, and I don't know many these folks particularly well.)
Student, so under $30/person would be ideal if do-able...

First aid kit sounds like a really original gift.

Things that I know you can never have enough of are onesies or sleepers.

I have also purchased clothing for when the child is 1-2 years old. People always give infant clothing, so then the child doesn't have anything for when they get older.

I always give books for baby gifts.

New parents usually get TONS of clothes and toys, and everything else is really expensive so I stick with books. Babies/kids can never have too many books and there are some really cute sets out there. Eric carle cardboard book sets are my fav to give. Some even come with cute toys. I gave my nephew the hungry caterpillar book that came with a stuffed caterpillar.

Plus books are good because you can get them for cheap. You can easily get a few books/book sets for under 20$

I like the first aid kit idea. Thats original.

I usually go to showers with people that are registered. I just print out the list and then buy what I think is cute and affordable on the list.

ditto! I give a few outfits 3mnths, 6mnths, 9mnths, 12mnths, 18mnths,24mnths. One of each. I also try to have some sort of theme.

Get some stuff for Mom. Maybe some bubble bath or a scented candle. A gift card for dinner can be good too.
Baby lotions and bath stuff can be good. There are some nice baby bath lotions and such avaliable.
If there is a theme for the nursery, go for something along those lines. Receiving blankets are always needed.
Books about raising children and books to read to kids are appreciated.
Visit a toy store and find something you think is cute.
Cd's with children's songs (lullabies) can be nice.

As you are needing a few gifts, you could give each person the same thing. If you know the gender of the baby, try to personalize it a bit. If you don't know, get gender neutral things.

I've been giving this seahorse as a baby gift lately:

From what I've heard from many parents (and the reviews), babies really like it and it does help them sleep. It isn't too expensive, either. In the same theme, I've heard this book is really good at helping babies sleep:

I love baby clothes but I know babies usually get a ton of clothes so I get something different.

baby showers arent that common here. On the last 2 occasions when friends have had babies, i gave one mum a gift basket of lotions and soaps for her. for the second i made a pram blanket - neither she or her other friends know how to sew.

one of my kids was given a little money box with £5 in it.

btw - we love the hungry caterpillar too:biggrin2:

Make a care pack ?
Something like
1 bottle
a sleeper
some socks
mittens
a blanket.

stuff like that
Even, when my brother and his girlfriend had my nephew, they didn't have much money to buy the powderd milk so mym om went out and baught a few cans (11$ each-ish) so if their planning on going that route, it wouldn't hurt to get one can of Enfamil A+ and if the baby is lactose or something and cant use it, it has a pretty nice shelf life if they want more kids.

I would get them a bouncer they are cheap and come in handy when I have the twins at night and there fussy pop them in there and they are set.

Oneys the white once the twins where those all the time. Diapers they dont stay in new born long my sister has 10 packs of new borns and the twins are out of them.

Size one and two everyone will bring new born stuff go for a little older. 3 to 6 is big cause most babys are in those by 2 months old.

My sister has a lot of cute stuff for them to where out but in the house the where oneys an those shirts they are white like oneys but they did not cover there belly botton when they where still heeling.

Bottle my sister is not picky I bought the sheep ones from waltmart. all the bottles the twins use are from me.

Another thing a diaper bag with all the fillings. I filled a diaper bog with.

2 passy two kids though. a bottle cleaner. the plastic wipes holder they make little ones that fit in bags. a pack of white oneys. a pack of socks. again get the 0 to6 month new born fit for like a week. a change of cloth buy a nice outfit and put it in there. A folder shena keep all the baby medicade paper work in there bag so its always with them. a changing pad you can buy those plastic pads to put the baby on when out and about.

And of you buy passy wal mart sell the one they give at the hospital the twin wont suck on anything else. So I bought shena two packs of those you can never have enough passys.

Hope this helps oh and what ever you get add a pack of diapers and a pack of baby hangers. No one ever thinks about hangers.

The only other thing I could think of is some kind of laying mat for her living room. Sometime they sleep in the living room and mom bought nana a nice play mat but for now its a nap mat.

Oha nd with the size thing the twins where the size of preemys. So if it a big baby the size will shoot up even higher
Hope this helps

Also, alot of people buy diapers for 'right now' but what happens when they don't fit all of a sudden.
It would be a good idea to buy a size higher too =)

From my experience... YES to the happiest baby on the block book (saved my life)!

And yes to baby board books!

Eric Carle (hungry caterpillar) and Sandra Boyton make wonderful tales.

I got a lot of clothes, actually mostly 6 months + and stuffies, but not many toys per se. And 1 book.

You can get first aid kits for babies at Toys R Us, but we never really used any of the items in it. Except for maybe the thermometer.

For my nephews babyshower, everyone had that idea, Step (for the first aid kits)
He ended up with like 5 thermometers.
It was funny :)
But now, he's thankful he had so many... they get lost so easy lol.

My co-worker had a baby and I held a shower for her. Luckily, that was my gift (I also gave a stuffed animal that was more for the mom than the baby)! They were registered at a couple of places, mostly for simple stuff because she's a student as well. Things like diaper rash cream, shampoo, lotion, powder, really simple stuff--that was all very appreciated. I'm pretty sure Johnson and Johnson and Burt's Bees make "baby toiletries" kits that have most of what they'd need. If you're totally out of ideas, a gift card to Target is always great. I second the comment about formula--it's really expensive if they want to go that route, but a lot of people don't, or they only feed a little formula. I think the activity center things are really good, or things to hang over the crib like mobiles to keep them entertained. It can be hard for a new parent to know how to keep their baby entertained--my friend says hers just stares at her with this look like "do something funny!"

I usually buy a baby bath tub and fill it with baby wash clothes, baby bath products and a few baby toys. Stick a cute stuffed animal in the center and put a large bow on it :)

I just rememberd something and rushed to get on to post.
Alot of people buy things for the baby.. but no one realizes the mom is going to spend the next few weeks in pj's and robes... riggghttt
my mom baught my brothers, ahem, girlfriend (teehee ill be nice) a bathrobe and some flannel pjs, ontop of the other gifts.

You girls are just too awesome!
It was really wonderful to come home today to this greatlist of ideas :)

Thank you so very much for contributing your wisdom! I've certainly got a lot of planning to do :)
Thank you again!

I also try to focus on mom I give spa days or even a 90 min massage at a nice massage parlor
