I work out of my home for a call center (long story - I won't get into it).

I frequently get customers saying, "So where are you?" and my response is just "Texas"....since that IS the state I live in.

Anyway - Art came up with a better response for me...I really can't say where I work by town because we're too small to have a real call center here.

He says I should say, "I'm in an underground bunker so no one can find us.."

I love it. I can't use it - but I love it. SO I had to share it with someone!

I take calls from all over, and a lot of customers think they have called the local offices.
Very oftenI'll get into the start of the conversation and they'll ask where I'm located. I think the accent...or maybe the lack of accent.... gives it away.

On Friday, I had several callers from the Orlando, Fl general area and I learned to chat with them instead of putting them on hold while researching something. In the process, I learned it was raining in Orlando.

So someone else called about an address to mail something and I said, "Orlando, Fl" and he was like, "Oh..how's the weather there in Orlando today?"

My response? "Well...its raining and we'd love some sunshine"..

PHEW!

We talked about this the other night in our coaching session - how if you say where the company is located (in this case- Denver, CO)...they might say, "well..what do you think of the construction on the highway?" or some other question if they're local....

So one person said, "well..you could say you're in Hawaii" and another gal went "oh no..that won't work. I had a lady call me today from Hawaii - she was on vacation and on the beach in the sand and asked me if I could hear the waves..".

I think I'll stick with Texas as my answer.

But yesterday - the idea of those underground bunkers sounded so good. It was a horrible day...

One of the things I did, when I was working the IT help desk, was check out the nation's weather.
Very often we had time to spend while things downloaded....so the obvious thing to talk about was the weather.
Scan the headlines to see if there's anything interesting, too.

I had one client that called me from Laguna Beach, CA... she'd sit on her patio and call in.....I could hear the surf and seagulls in the background when she called. Got depressing when it was snowing like all get out here!
