I got my rabbits some apple twigs that they sell in the store and they seem to really like them. I live close to an apple orchard and was thinking of asking the owners if I could come by and collect some branches when they do their pruning. Has anyone done this? I'm wondering if the wood needs to be dried before giving it to the rabbits.

Mine love apple twigs, you just need to check that they haven´t been sprayed with anything. I give mine the twigs with the leaves which they can eat as well as long as they´re nice and green. It´s really good for their teeth as they wear them down chewing the bark off.

Here are my three happily chomping away

My guy prefers his twigs when they are green, straight off the tree. So they are ok green or dried. I save all mine when we prune once a year.

As others have said, just make sure they haven't been sprayed.

I would be hesitant to have twigs from an apple orchard because they would be bound to be spraying with something. If they're willing if give you some, you could always ask when they were last sprayed and if it's months ago it should be alright, as long as they weren't using a systemic.

I didn't think about the pesticides at the orchard. I'm sure they use them. Instead, I think I'll get branches off some apple trees that I know of in a neighborhood green space where they are kind of just growing wild so I know they haven't been sprayed.

They do love them. I got mine from my friend´s garden so I know there´s nothing on them and it is so good for their teeth.

You could always put up an ad on kijiji or craigslist - some people are doing their tree pruning at this time of year, and would be happy to keep some fruit tree branches aside for your buns :)
