At first I thought my cage was roomy for 2 rabbits but now people are telling me that it is a bit too small for 2 medium sized rabbits.

My cage has 33.6 sq ft, in it and apparently that is not enough. I wish I could extend the cage but I can't, I literally have 7" of space left to go in and out of my closet door, and also someone told me that shelves don't count when counting sq ft in cages.

Is it really too small? Even though it is short by only 2.4 sq. ft? My cage measurements are 4.6' x 7' with a 4' second shelf (for lounging or something - I plan on putting carpet up there, or should I use stick on vinyl tiles?)

as far as I know, it's 60+ square feet (minimum) *or* 4-5h a day outside the cage. 33.6 square feet is more than big enough as long as they're getting "out" time.

Oh yes they will definitely get time out side their cage, this is just for when I am sleeping/ at school/ busy, I forgot to mention that here but I mentioned this to others but they still said it was a tiny bit too small

nah, it's more than enough space if they're just in it when you're sleeping or not at home.

Everyone is going to have an opinion. Doesn't mean they are always right. You'll be the best judge of what is enough space and what works best for you and your rabbits.

I like to use carpet myself when I can. They get the best traction on it, but if you have a chewer then you can't use it cause injested fibers can cause serious problems. I would recommend a thin carpet that doesn't have those stringy fibers that they could pull up and swallow. I use this really thin carpet that has rubber type backing.

I would say a minimum of 12 square feet eg 4'x3' or 6'x2' for a cage that a rabbit is going to spend more than a couple of hours in, then extra space for exercise. I think the totals you're quoting is if you've a cage/pen or hutch/run all in one style setup.

Thank you, you are right JBun. Argh, oh well. I'll see if I can change things around tonight, if I can't then well I just can't. I am trying to give my rabbits an excellent life so hopefully my trying will make up for my failures

it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with your rabbits so far - I haven't heard anything that comes even close to sounding like "failures"! :)
