If we are allowed we might adopt a baby hammie next week. I wanted to know if anyone here have hammies.

What is the best bedding, food, etc.

I know I need plastic covered wheels for the hammies, some said plain pellets is better, just get sun flower seeds as treats, and some said carefresh. Do I have to use carefresh, I am not fond of them cause they made me sneeze. What other bedding is optional.

I have had hamsters in the past, and never once did I have a hamster that I liked :?. They all were biters and smelled worst than my rats and rabbits. I always clean cages every 4 days and spot clean inbetween, as well.

For rodents, rats are my top choice. They are just like little dogs.

Bedding: I wouldn't use carefresh. I personally think it is dusty and smells bad once peed on. I used Lavender Soft Sorbent with my mice, and loved it. Aspen works as well.

Wheels: You can either use a plastic covered wheel...such as a Silent Spinner. You could also use the BEST rodent wheel out there.....a Wodent Wheel. You can also use a mesh wheel. You can find all these at a pet store, but you may have to order the Wodent Wheel offline...if you can't find it at a PETsMART.

Food: I would feed a homemade grain mix that I (and many others) use for their rats, mice, and hamsters.

Here is my grain mixture that my rats are currently on. I based my grain mixture off of other homemade grain mixtures. You can find all the ingredients at the grocery store....

- Wheat Puffs Cereal.
- Total Brand Whole Grain Cereal.
- Sunflower seeds (I use black oil).
- Organic Veggie Pasta.
- Egg Noodles.
- Whole Grain Oats (Quaker or the off-brand, old fashioned, not instant).
- Honey Bunches of Oats (plain kind or the kind with fried fruits).
- Organic Wheat Cheerio's.
- Puffed Rice Cereal.

You will also need to have a staple, such as a lab block. The highest quality lab block that you can get is Harlan Teklad. I suggest ordering Teklad #2018.

You can order it from this site:

If you can't order offline, then the next best thing to get would be Mazuri Lab Blocks. You can get them from PETsMART, but for the price....ordering Harlan offline would be much cheaper and it is of much higher quality.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER feed your small animals those nasty seed mixes from the pet store. They are full of junk that your animal doesn't need....making them fat and unhealthy. Not to mention, most lose nutrience from sitting on store shelves for so long.

Feeding your small animal a seed mix from the pet store is like you eating McDonald's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner....EVERY day of your life .

Always remember, a healthy diet leads to a healthier life :).

Hi SweetPeasMommie, I have a hamster, and I used to feel the same way as Amy about them, stinky little biters. But so far I've had nothing but positive experiences with mine.

A good site for info is: http://critterscoop.com go to articles, then Hamster Tips, there are lots of articles with good information. There are also instructions for making bin cages, which are much more roomy than store bought cages.

Good luck with your new little one!

We're fostering a hamster temporarily and he is the SWEETEST thing on the planet! Has never even considered biting.

Wow all three of you had biters and some issues. I have spoken to about 5 hammie owners and never had issues.

One girl said she cleaned the cages once a week. Never smelled. She did tell me not to use the seeded mixture hammie foods. Do they have hammie foods without all the stuff that I can buy.

Buying all those choices above will be a bit of an issue. I can do some once a week on payday. But that is it, but I will add that to my list.

This hammie that I am getting next saturday is a baby only 8 or 9 wks old, has been handled everyday. My friend Kate's hubby is going to school for vet tech and they are at his school, she is bringing me a girl next sat to a pignic that I am hosting in Pgh Pa.
What other bedding could I use outside of carefresh. I will look for the lavendar stuff, I love lavendar, are they expensive?

No. I said he was the sweetest thing and that I didn't have issues. Yukondaisy said she has had a good experience with her recent hammie. What three people are you talking about?

Personally, I use Carefresh Ultra. And not all of the mixes in stores are bad- most are, but the ones like Hazel Hamster are quite good.

I have a hamster named Dante, and one named Othello. At one point I had over fifteen.

Oh my god - sooooooo cute!!! I am even more excited about meeting my little guy now! :D

My brain has not be funtioning right lately.

Your baby is so cute, I am allowed to have a hammie, I am supposed to adopt one on sat, so hopefully she will be in my hands on sat.

This hammie is supposed to be a girl that I requested and the name I picked is Arwen.

Wow 15 that is a handful, but not as handful as 22 guinea pigs, 2 buns and 1 dog at one point. lol

Thank you about the food. I will see if my pet store carries them.

I am getting a baby boy on saturday a black one. So I am not sure on the name but I am having problems finding a good cage.

The one I want has bad reviews on it and I really don't want that. what kind of cages are you using. I have a 10 gal I will be using as a temporary cage, I really don't want to use an aquarium at all cause of ventilations.

Help

My friend emailed me, he is at their home now, they have been spoiling him already. lol she said he is very cute and very docile the way I love it. She said he looks like Aidan. That is one of the names i had picked along with Harley and Stormi. So once I see his pic and meet him I will have a name picked then.

He is here, I got him yesterday. he is so cute, he is a black bear syrian. I am glad I waited on a cage. I found one that is great for syrians.

He is black with 4 white paws, he has a white stripe from his chin down to his belly. He has a white circle on his belly. Not sure of his name but here is one pic I can show ya.

My hubby is calling him Slick cause his fur is so soft and hard to hold. I have 3 I like Aidan, Harley, or Stormi. He is so sweet and lovable. Loves to be petted.
