So husband and I went to the Nebraska Furniture Mart this afternoon to look for a new coffee table. I got our current one at a thrift store 5 years ago, for $5. It looks old and yucky, and I've gotten my money's worth out of it. So we want to get something to go with our new sofa that got delivered this morning.
Since the Mart moved in, most other furniture stores have gone out of business, so they're pretty much the only game in town. Big selection, decent prices, though.
Well, walking around the store, noticing that all of the coffee tables (which seem to be called "cocktail tables" now) were *huge*. I stopped a salesman and asked if he could show us some smalller-sized coffee tables. He said, "houses are big, furniture is big." When I explained that we live in an apartment, he laughed at us. Yes, he laughed. I said we were looking to buy a new table, he laughed again and pretty much told us that we should just leave, because there was nothing for us there. He didn't even *try* to help us. (We walked around a little more, there were about 4 smaller coffee tables in the whole store, but they were all oak finish, and we need black.)
So now I'm really irritated. I even wrote a nasty email to their customer service about how we were mocked for not living in a big (ie, expensive) house.
Does living in an apartment not entitle us to have good quality furniture? Just because we rent doesn't mean we can't afford something that doesn't come from Walmart. (Thank you new relatives I've never met for wedding money!) And how about people who live in smaller houses because they don't *want* to live in a huge place? (I don't want to live in a "big American house." That's more to clean and heat, and we're not going to have kids, anyway, so what's the point. I don't like extra stuff I don't need cluttering up the place, so it's not like I need 8 rooms to store a bunch of junk.) I felt really insulted, and I don't know if we'll go back there soon.
But now I'm stuck, because we need a new coffee table.
Sorry, just had to rant.
