my 3 pound 12 ounce female dutch got ahold of a raw sweet potato last night...luckily i was able to catch her before she nibbled away at too much. today, however, she got into the pantry again and got ahold of another sweet potato, this time eating about 1/5 of it. she usually eats a balanced diet of leafy greens, pellets, and timothy.

after she got ahold of the sweet potato the second time, i grew a little concerned and googled around to see if it was okay for her to eat...i found a list saying that sweet potatoes are toxic to rabbits, but so far she seems perfectly healthy and has been munching away on her normal food as usual and seems to be digesting things just fine. she seems completely normal, and i have locked the pantry up so she can't sneak in anymore.

does anyone have experience with this? do i need to take her to the vet? if so, i am worried because i am caught in the current east coast blizzard without a car...if there is even a vet office open, i would have significant trouble getting to it. :tears2:

I don't really know what to tell you since I'm new to rabbits, but I would think that at this point there isn't much that can be done about it. I don't know how toxic sweet potatoes really are for rabbits. Perhaps you could try to get her to eat a lot of hay to help move things along? Do you have a vet that you can call?

I have been trying to find a answer to this ..it seems that the vines and stem are part of the nightshade famuily and are toxic but the potato itselfI cannot get a clear anwser. :?
What i would do is push hay and watch her. Even if it was toxic she probably did not eat enough of it to har m her.
if it was my rabbitI wuld watch her push hay and do nothing else.I think that she will be fine.

thanks for the help everyone...her behavior remains completely normal. i gave her a big handful of timothy. i think she will be fine too.

So sorry I missed this! Sweet potato won't hurt her. The reason it's on some unsafe lists is because it does something like draws other nutrients from the body (?), you don't want to have it as part of the diet, but its fine if she eats it.

thank you! big relief. she's relaxing on the top floor of her condo right now so i think she is doing great!

Scamp did the same thing only he had a good munch out of half a dozen different ones. I guess he was checking they all tasted the same. He's a little terror but it had absolutely no effect on him or his poop. He was a bit miffed at being turfed out of the rack they were in though.

haha well i suppose the mischief is all part of being a rabbit slave...annabelle is usually a perfect little angel though, so i am a little upset with her!

I had the same problem with my buns and ivy. Ivy is also toxic to buns. They ate a decent amount of it. I freaked out and kept an eye on them for a few days since they live outside. It seems like your bun is okay now.

If it happens again, there's not much to do except keep an eye on your bun and have the number and address to the closest vet in case of an emergency.
