Hey guys, i need your help! I'm looking for animal heroes. i already found one for search and rescue dogs and i'm going to go look for seeing eye dogs next, but after that i'm pretty much drawing a blank. can you guys think of any more animal heroes? animals other than dogs are great too(verity is the spice of life...........). my mom and grandma inlisted me to help them with this and i just can't think of any others:?:D

thanks for the help!

alright, got the pigeons, i'll work on the bomb dogs later, i need to talk to mom and see if she think that will be ok, it's for church and they'll be going into classes for kids 4-15, so i'm not sure if that'll be ok or not, don't want to freak the kids out, LOL!

Arson Dogs, Cadavar dogs...

Look up war dogs. Smokey was a Yorkshire Terrier - Chips was an unruley German Shepherd given up by his owner...

Um - maybe stick with Arson or War dogs from my picks then.

Oh, there's also the dogs that have been used on expeditions (though a great many of them never returned :(; you could skip relating thatfact). And there are dogs used for hearing now, and monkeys used as service animals for disabled people.

I don't have a ton of information on this, but I'm sure with a few searches on Google you can come up with something --

I remember a while back reading (or seeing) something about miniature horses helping people with disabilities. If I remember correctly I believe they helped a woman who was suffering from an extreme case of epilepsy. These horses were trained to live indoors - much like a dog - with their owners and I do believe there are programs that specifically deal with miniature horses as service animals.

I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for here, but there has been a lot of media attention on Michael Vicks' pitbulls that are now working as therapy dogs. That may be easier to find information on than the miniature horses, but I thought I'd offer that as I remember it being very interesting and horses always draw kids in...

Good luck and let us know what all you find out :)!

How about dogs that have been sent in to rescue little kids? I don't remember if they're with the police or not, but they swim out to hard to reach places or they hoist them down into wells or pipes to rescue little children that fell in.- the dog somehow puts a harness around the kid so the people at the top can haul them out. Really amazing. I've heard of some guard parrots/macaws.

Hmmm

Oh I know! Horses! They've been known to save people, protect them in dangerous situations. Even swim out an save their owner from drowning.

There's also the animals that help advance medical research, maybe you could just touch on it very very lightly like the chimps who learned how to speak sign language and do special things. Also Gorillas have been known to be heroic, too.

Wasn't there something about dogs being used to deliver medication in the remote regions of Alaska? Wasn't that how the Iditarod was formed? I believe that was the route the dogs used to take the medication to save the people of small remote mining villages.

"In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life saving highway for epidemic-stricken Nome. Diphtheria threatened and serum had to be brought in; again by intrepid dog mushers and their faithful hard-driving dogs. "

I think there are so many instances of animals helping mankind. Good luck with your project.

myheart
