What a great article! I wish though that they had mentioned "coastal hay"....as it is all I can get here sometimes.

When I got hay last week - my only choices were alfalfa hay in a bundle (I forget what you call those rectangular things..too late at night/early in the morning) or a big huge round thing of coastal hay. Needless to say - I took the alfalfa..

Also - hay has become very high here (of course...since its winter). It's gone from $4.50 and $5.00 per bundle to $9 and he said the next time it may be $11 or $13 - depending upon where he can get it and what he can get...

Oh well - my rabbits were THRILLED to have alfalfa instead of coastal for a change..

But enough rambling - thanks for the link to a GREAT article!

P.S. Would you believe that for Christmas - the one gift I asked for and didn't get - was specialty hays from Barbi Brown's website (oat hay and I forget what else..). I was really disappointed but my son said, "How can I tell people I bought you two bundles of hay? NO...I won't do it!".

That article has awebsite listedcalled Hay Exchange. I might try buying from the person listing in my area. If it's good, it would be so much cheaper than Oxbow. But how do I tell if a bale is good?

Peg, your son should meet my mom- she'll convince him. She likes to buy practical gifts, and I love it. One year she offered to buy me new tires for my car for Christmas. I told her sheshould put ribbons on them and put them under the tree.:)

The local farmers I buy from are very honest about the quality. They will tell you if it's suitable for horse, rabbits or better for cattle, mulch, etc. Someone recently placed an ad in our local papaer 'poor quality hay for sale cheap - suitable for cows and mulch'. I thought it was pretty funny.

You may need to see the hay, ask how it;s stored, check if there are big coarse bits in it. Once I get it home, I usually pull off a flake or 2 at a time and check it for weeds, stalks and pull those out. I have one who will eat local hay and the others want Oxbow.

I just got a new 25lb. box of Oxbow timothy (although I also feed orchard grass). It smells so good that I think that I'll munch on some myself.

I know that feeling - our last bale of alfalfa hay (normally I get coastal) smelled sooooo good.....

Hmm...maybe a salad? (just kidding).

Thanks for the great information! I feed my rabbit a variety of hays, and in the late spring/summer/fall months, she get the 'bale hay' from the farmers (which she enjoys nibbling on) as well as outside insulation in her outdoor rabbit hutch.
