I just wanted to share a heartwarming and sad but hopeful story with you all becuase you have been such a help to me. It is long, but stick with it.
I got a new german Hybrid doe two months ago. Ever since I got her she went on and off feed and water. She got better for a strech and I thought she was better so I bred her to my buck Jack. Then she went through a really bad bout and I had her on fluids again. I was in the vet nearly every day and we could not find a problem. I did not think the breeding took because she was in such poor health ( and I hoped it hadn't for her sake)After many fecals and urinalyses we finally got a good look at her molars and realized that they were maloccuded! At least we had an answer to the problemnow. Then she developed a bladder infection and things went from bad to worse. I had finally come to the decision to put her down when I felt a tiny kick and realized that she had indeed become pregnant from the breeding with my buck. I was shocked and worried. She still was not eating anything but the freshest picked greens and her subsequent bladder infection had gotten worse. I decided to nurse her along so she could birth the babies which were due on the 28th. I wasn't sure that she had the strength and became more and more distraught as the 28th, and 29th came and went. Then this morning I woke early to go give meds and fluids and found her dead with 5 beautiful kits nursing from her. She was such an amazing mother that she laid down next to them so they could nurse and be safe and warm before she passed. There was one dead kit and two peanuts, but the rest were healthy and robust. I was so proud of her. I cleaned them up and called everyone I knew to find a foster mother for them. I know success is not very good for bottle feeding newborns. I found a woman who raises meat rabbits and agreed to take them on. I am glad she didn't just hang up on the stranger calling her at 7:00am. I hope the fostering goes well and I will just have to wait and see about their teeth. I am just going to take it one step at a time with that dilemma. I cannot tell you how touching and heartbreaking that scene was this morning. She had cleaned them up just enough so that they were out of their sacks and could nurse and positioned herself perfectly so they would have a chance. She was truly a heroic mother. :rose:
