Hello everybody! I have a 5 month female that I think is going into her "reproductive state" for the first time, and I was wondering if it is normal for her to be leaving poopies all over the house while she is in this "state"? I've had her since 2 months old and she's always gone just inside her cage, never out in her playing areas. Thanks for the responses!

She has started territorial behavior and "marking" areas with her poo. It's not a heat as rabbits do not go into or have heat cycles it is rather just her hitting puberty and becoming an adult bunny as males do this as well. Spaying can help alleviate or not worsen this behavior

Yep, that's the joys of a grown-up rabbit. They don't all react the same way, some of mine didn't change at all when they hit puberty while others were nightmares. You're lucky if it's only poos, though, one of mine was spraying urine everywhere (he began doing it around 3 and a half month and it went surprisingly high on the walls!). It stopped the day of the neutering - I could have married my vet, really XD. I knew of a female rabbit who was free range and she was pretty clean just... when people sat down, especially at dinner time, she came running and spraying urine on the legs of all the people sitting. Yeah... rabbits. Spaying is your only chance of salvation (it worked for mine, everytime, and the result was pretty much instantaneous in the clean department).

A follow up question for me is, will this behavior continue until I get her fixed, or will it only last for a little bit while she is going threw changes?

It may stay the same but It could also worsen. Other territorial behaviors could arise as well like cage aggression

Hi,

I had the same experience at around 5~6 months with both are female mini-rex's, it was PoopieVille all over! We found a really good pet hospital, had them spayed and after a few days the poopies were on a decline. Now (a few months later) things are going so well that we play with them in the carpeted areas of the house. note: after a while we'll lead them back to the litter box for a pit stop"just in case" .

Plus there's the health benefits that come with spaying...

good luck,
Rick

our female didn't really mark her territory, but the males sure did! As soon as I had my male neutered, the behavior pretty much stopped. And yes, both of my males sprayed. I still have one more male to get neutered and I will be glad. He doesn't spray as much as he used to and only does it on the pet blanket areas, thankfully, but their urine has a stronger odor if not fixed!
