Hello there,

I noticed yesterday that my rabbit has a small red lump at the top of his eye. Today I noticed this lump has a little white area on it (most likely pus). He is his usual self - eating and drinking normally and running around and binkying. Could he have scratched his eye? I told my Mum about this and she said to clean it with a cotton bud and very diluted salt-water - is this a good idea?

I don't know much about bunny sicknesses but I hope that what he has is nothing serious.

I would get him to the vet ASAP. It could turn in to an abscess and they are nasty.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I did clean his eye with the diluted salt-water and then let him out for a run. He was running around normally, then had a little wash and then I checked his eye again. It looks to have done some good as it has gone back to how it looked yesterday i.e. just the red lump and no white stuff. I am taking this as a good sign but obviously will keep an eye on it.

My Tony will get these--they look like whiteheads on the eyelid. The vet gave me some antibiotic drops for his eye and they work well. I got them once and used them again whenever they popped up again, with the vet's blessing. I'd do this so that it doesn't develop into something more serious. They are called meibomian cysts.
