Me and my sister noticed 2 days ago that the area around my rabbit's left eye is very wet and his fur is always wet now, his other eye is fine though. I took a picture of both his eyes and put it into this thread. My sister researched it on google and she said that he might have an eye infection from dust in his eyes and that if this isn't treated, he can get brain damage and pass away... Me and my sister want to take him to the vet but my mother doesn't want us too because she is having a surgery soon and she is wrong in the head and thinks that me and my sister have to choose between taking care of her or my rabbit, so long story short, I probably won't be able to go to the vet, please don't tell me that I should see a vet, I would LOVE to do that, we are poor too, my rabbit was sick once before and he had to get an IV and it cost over $200 which is A LOT for my family. It was a very big burden but it was the first time he was ill so we reacted right away, he had a blockage.

How can I help him get better? I will clean the carpets and floors (he is not caged, he runs around the entire house but he is mainly in the living room, he sleeps in a cage at 11pm and we let him out at 5 am), I wanted to know if there's something I can do for him physically to help him recover. His eye looks normal (but wet), and his fur around his eye is very wet and when I go to place a tissue on his eye, the tissue is always wet... When I placed the tissue on his eye and applied minimal pressure, he did not show any signs of discomfort, and there is no discharge either, it is just very wet. I also read that rabbits with teeth problems also get runny eyes, what can I do to help? (Don't tell me to go to a vet to seek their help, if it turns out I am able to go, obviously I will. I can't stress this enough, I need actual help right now as to what I can do.) He's turning 7 years old in January 2013, and he's a Dutch rabbit.

Thank you so much for reading and please give me any feedback, even if you don't know how to help me, support is appropriated! Bless you all.

Some thoughts:

Have you changed bedding recently? WHere is the bunny housed? Are there any drafts near by? Has the environment changed recently? Could dust have gotten in the eye? Sometimes there are irritants that can get in their eye, like hay dust even.

You can try plain saline eyewash for people to rinse the eye a little if you want to flush out anything that could have gotten in there, I know some people find that to be a help. It doesn't look too bad so it could likely get better quickly on its own.

you can try what bunnylova4eva suggested, but if that doesn't work, a vet trip may be unavoidable >< many vets are willing to set up payment plans, though, which could ease the financial burden... you could also call any rabbit rescues/shelters that take rabbits in your area and ask them if they can recommend any low-cost treatment options, as your family is low on funds.

How can I make a saline eyewash for him? And could you tell me the procedure? Thank you so much!
