To spay or not to spay ... (seeking research)

Even though I understand that spaying is recommended to reduce the risk of certain cancers I've been very hesitant to spay my 1 1/2 year-old rescue bunny due to the high cost and the risk of her dying in surgery. In terms of cost, my own vet charges $1600 and the last time I checked the lowest...

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

Update! Bunny is now a complete fluff ball again. I also just brought her in for a check up and she weighs a healthy 4.3 lbs. Thanks again to everyone who shared their insight!

    Pet insurance?

I did some research last summer and all the rabbit-savvy vets in the NYC area were charging close to $1,000 minimum for spaying when you included the required preliminary work-up -- unless you qualified for reduced rates, which I don't. I was also very freaked out by all of the postings on...

    Pet insurance?

I'm really up in the air about this! I confirmed with my vet yesterday that Nationwide is the only insurer that covers rabbits in the United States. Nationwide's rates went up significantly a few years ago. One reason you hear such mixed reviews about their pet insurance is that rabbits that...

Newly adopted rabbit not eating hay - any tricks to getting him to eat more hay

In case it helps, I order Oxbow "Hay Blends Western Timothy and Orchard Grass" online. My rabbit now eats it heartily and the quality has been consistently good.

Newly adopted rabbit not eating hay - any tricks to getting him to eat more hay

I had trouble getting my rabbit to eat hay when I first adopted her. At the suggestion of some wise bunny folk on this site I got her acclimated by mixing hay into her fresh greens. She's now a big hay eater but I do find that she eats lots more hay when I put it into her greens bowl after she...

    RHVD2 Experiences

I live in the NYC metro area. I consulted with the Dakota veterinary clinic - the most rabbit savvy vet near me - and was told that it is currently cost prohibitive for them to acquire a license to import the vaccine, which I think is a very interesting problem. My rabbit is healthy but I've...

When you clean your bunnies home base…

We call that 'making a meadow.' Bunnies are experts at it.😁

How to get my parents to let me free roam my bunny?

I had the same problem with my husband lol. After my previous bunny chewed some of our lamp cords, and also one of his slippers, he never ever felt comfortable having him spend a lot of time in our living space. Bunny ended up in the basement and it was always difficult to give him enough...

My little princess is gone 😭

Sounds like you're both going through a very tough adjustment. But you're a thoughtful and caring rabbit parent so I know you and your bunny will come through this okay. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

    Bunny’s water bowl

I use this one and it's been fantastic. With bottles my bunny didn't seem to drink much, and after I switched to bowls I was always worried that she would run out of water. With the 64 oz bottle, I refill it every 2-3 days. Highly recommend. PetSafe Healthy Pet Water Station - Gravity Pet Water...

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

Thanks for all your thoughts. Since she seems to be feeling fine and is behaving normally I'm going to try not to panic and just keep an eye on her. More than anything I think I was just startled by her appearance. I'll keep you posted.

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

Unfortunately I've not figured out how to weigh her (tried standing with her on the scale but she hates being picked up and won't sit still on it herself). I'll try again today and will also reach out to my vet to see what her baseline weight was. She gets 6 tablespoons of pellets per day now...

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

This is exactly my concern. I actually thought she looked a little overweight a couple of weeks ago. I can now feel all her bones and spine just petting her. Do they feel sharp versus rounded? I can't say for sure without much experience examining other rabbits. That said, she eats tons of hay...

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

Her hay has been consistent : Oxbow Timothy and meadowgrass mix. She's still getting too much dry food but I'm trying to reduce it slowly. You are right about the greens though. Her stomach does seem to be very gurgly lately and I think I should reduce those. I've gotten her to eat a lot more...

Is my bunny wasting away or just shedding like crazy?

In addition to unlimited hay, she gets about 4 cups of greens a day-- (combinations of carrot tops, cilantro, and baby lettuce), and versele laga complete. I'd been giving her a 1/4 cup of pellets each morning and evening but reduced that slightly a couple of weeks ago after reading that pellets...
