It’s easier to pick up a rabbit when they’re in a small area, like a pen, as opposed to a big room. Try sitting on the floor and offer a treat to gain some trust. Pet them when they’re close.
It’s important that your rabbit get used to being handled. Your vet will appreciate it, too.
I agree that the more you have the harder it is to exercise them. Our Polish were lap bunnies so didn’t really move around much when I let them out. With our Tans we set up a long carpeted running board on sawhorses and let them run up and down, a couple at a time. Sometimes we’d bring a few in...
A breeder can say it’s promising at a young age, but from experience I know things can change as the kit gets to 8-12 weeks of age. Best to watch and wait.
The time is variable on when the kit is weaned...it’s really up to the doe. We’ve had some does who had enough by 5-6 weeks and with a few we finally had to take the kits away because mom kept nursing. Generally, once eyes are open they’ll be much more active and by 3-4 weeks they’re nibbling on...
If you have the doe and bucks pedigrees you can see if there are any other colors in their lines. REW is dominant but they can also throw recessive colors from previous generations. I’m not an expert on genetics, but we bred REW Polish for several years.
Eyes usually open between 12-14 days. I would put some fresh hay up there at least, and try to clear the obstruction. Take the baby when she’s not up there, but you need to do it soon.
Besides asking local breeders, learn how to read a feed tag. It will tell you when the feed was milled. We used Purina Show because it was easy to get, our rabbits ate it, and with all the FFA kids using it we knew it would be fresh.
Agree, on first mating we tried to get three successful fall offs with the buck. If we tried against the next day and the doe had turned aggressive then we stopped trying because she was most likely pregnant.
So far, so good! She’s pulling hair for the nest, and fed the kit. Because you have a lone kit be sure to check on it every so often to make sure the doe covers him with hair after leaving the nestbox.
I would start out slow on giving him more room to move around. When he hurt his leg did you have a vet look at it? I ask because if a bone was broken it can take 4-6 weeks for it to heal well. It might take longer depending on his age.
Overall, it looks pretty good. Will you have them where the rabbits will get air circulation. That will be important since the walls are solid. Also, will you have a litter box in there? Having a wood floor will require diligent cleaning to keep ammonia smells down and prevent bacteria from...
This one is very similar to the kind we used. I liked the ones with a small roof on the back part. It allowed the kits to snuggle in the back without the doe stepping on them. Our Tans were about 4-5 pounds and we used boxes with 14-15” depth, keeping in mind the doe doesn’t normally go to the...
