Too soon for a new buck?

If you have to use a younger buck then it might take a little longer to get her bred. If you know how to correctly palpate then you don’t have to wait the 30 days to see if she took. You can usually safely breed a first time doe until they are a year old, maybe 1 1/2yrs.

Too soon for a new buck?

An alternative is to get an older buck or one that is already proven and just wait until the doe is 6 months old. I’d also make sure your hutch is secure so nothing can get in again.

My mini lop had a litter of 6 dead kits

It’s not unusual for first timers to have a failed litter. It doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be bred again, but since this was accidental you don’t need to try to breed her again.

    Small Litters/Who's the issue?

Being in Texas also, we found that heat plays a role in a buck’s fertility, especially if the rabbits are outside. Very soon it will be too hot to breed them unless you have them in a climate controlled area. Also, when we used one buck to breed to two does we typically tried to spread it out a...

Mum looks ill, babies are 6 weeks

I agree that it’s time to slowly wean them. I suspect mom was thumping that night because she was full of milk and needed them to nurse. Kits typically start eating mom’s pellets when they a few weeks old so by 6 weeks they should be fine.

Why are ethical breeding standards always different? (what are your ethical breeding standards)

Keep in mind that breeders breed for different purposes and that tends to dictate how some things are done. I follow with @SableSteel. We bred our rabbits to show, and sell to other show breeders. Temperament and good genetics are important, as well as breeding to standards. On the occasion we...

An Update on our member @woahlookitsme

Some of you may remember @woahlookitsme, a longtime member here. We raised and showed rabbits together for 9 years before she went off to vet school. I’m very proud to announce that next month she will be a DVM, graduating with High Honors. We need more rabbit savvy vets!

    Help! Lop Stillborns :(

It is possible that the buck is the problem but since you’ve only tried him once on each then you’d either need to try him on one of the does a second time...I’d probably use the proven doe, or take her to another breeder willing to let you breed her to one of her bucks.

Hey there I’m new to breeding rabbits and have some questions

Not a good idea. The vet should be told up front that the doe may be pregnant.

    Placement in cages

Actually, we kept our bucks in the lower cages and the does in the upper level.

    White Eared Rabbits

I understand that in the UK they breed for that but haven’t heard of it in the US. Whether they have white ears or not has more to do with the variety.

Bunny born with no eyes or nest eye?

At 3 weeks you need to get a vet to look at it. They should have opened by 14 days. In parting the hair are you saying there is no slit for the eyes?

My bunny after giving bith is somehow fat and not hungry!! Help! (RIP)

I’m sorry you lost her. Sometimes after giving birth does can develop issues like ketosis. They act just as yours did, and they can die if not quickly taken to a vet. It is very difficult to successfully raise newborns without the mom. I’m not sure what you have available in Brazil, but if...

    Fur Mites: Best Treatment

They would be okay for oral dosing. Do you have a needle that would fit it? I usually went to Tractor Supply to get these kind of supplies. If you have REWs/BEWs I would not use ivermectin on them. I did go to the vet the first time our rabbits had mites. After that we knew what to do, and the...

    Newborn Rabbit looks underfed

Newborns won’t survive much past 36-48 hours without being fed. We found that does seemed to instinctively know if there was something wrong with a kit, and they won’t feed it. Or the kit may not be trying or may be unable to nurse. Either way you could try turning the doe over and see if the...

    Fur Mites: Best Treatment

The dosage JBun mentions is correct. We had to treat our Tans, which were 5lbs, for fur mites. Ivermectin 1% dosage was .1 cc/ml orally. We repeated in 10-14 days, as needed. Unless you plan to need a lot of it, I believe you can get it in a 50ml bottle also. Because it’s an injectable, you’ll...

    Breeding cage ideas

To start, I would recommend a breeding trio - two does and 1 buck. You might want to look at building your own hutch. I had a breeder friend who raised Flemish and hers were made from wood and heavier gauge hardware cloth (for the sides). Due to their weight she had them on solid flooring.

Coat blow - shedding in the extreme

Rabbits can have small patches that are bare if they are blowing their coat pretty bad. It’s important to brush regularly during this time. We also gave papaya tablets to our rabbits when shedding season came (for us it was twice/year).
