I am planning to breed my two Netherland Dwarf does next weekend.
I was thinking that rather than breeding them on the same day to breed the proven doe first and the young one two or three days later.
That way I am hoping if by any chance the young doe is not taking care of her kits I can smuggle them into the older does nest (who hopefully will accept them) Is two to three days a good gap to plan for all eventualities?

Breeding on the same day would be better. Then if you do need to foster kits they will be the exact same age, and not have an age gap.

Emily The reason I wanted the young doe mated a bit later is that otherwise she may kindle before the proven doe and if she abandons the babies the other one wouldn't be ready to nurse them.

I practice the same thing. As long as they are the same breed you will not have problems with the babies being a few days older. If you ever do have to foster babies, have on hand a black permanent marker so you can "color" the babies that her fostered. Makes picking them out a lot easier! It doesn't do any damage to their fur as eventually it is licked off. You will have to re-mark them everyday.
